Therapeutic Massage for People Often Excluded from Wellbeing Services

At Every Body Needs Massage, I provide accessible, inclusive therapeutic massage for profoundly disabled people, people with complex physical disabilities, and individuals who may struggle to advocate for themselves.

Many of my clients live with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), complex neurological conditions, severe physical disabilities, sensory impairments, chronic pain, or limited communication.

My work is built around a simple belief:

Everyone deserves safe, respectful therapeutic touch, comfort, relaxation, and dignity.

Traditional wellbeing services are often inaccessible to disabled people. Many massage environments are not designed for wheelchair users, non-verbal clients, people with high support needs, or those who require slower, highly adapted approaches.

This practice exists to change that.

Why This Work Matters

Disabled people — particularly those with profound disabilities — are frequently excluded from therapeutic and wellbeing services.

Many people experience:

  • sensory overload or chronic stress

  • muscle tension and discomfort

  • limited opportunities for calming physical contact

  • social isolation

  • inaccessible environments

  • communication barriers

  • reduced autonomy and choice

  • exhaustion among family carers and support teams

For some people with profound disabilities, therapeutic touch can be one of the few accessible forms of non-verbal comfort, connection and sensory regulation.

Therapeutic massage cannot remove disability.

But it may help support:

  • relaxation

  • comfort

  • body awareness

  • reduced anxiety and distress

  • calmer sensory experiences

  • improved wellbeing

  • quality of life

  • moments of human connection and dignity

Every session is adapted to the individual.

A Specialist, Person-Centred Approach

I work slowly, respectfully and collaboratively with clients, families, carers and support staff.

Sessions are adapted around:

  • physical disabilities and positioning needs

  • wheelchair access

  • communication differences

  • sensory sensitivities

  • medical complexity

  • fatigue and energy levels

  • consent and capacity considerations

  • emotional safety and trust

Some clients communicate verbally.

Others communicate through behaviour, facial expression, body language, vocalisation, eye movement, breathing patterns or emotional responses.

Listening carefully to those forms of communication is an essential part of my work.

I believe therapeutic touch must always be:

  • consent-aware

  • trauma-informed

  • dignity-centred

  • paced appropriately

  • adaptable

  • respectful of vulnerability and boundaries

Supporting Families and Carers

The impact of profound disability is often felt across entire families.

Many parents and unpaid carers experience:

  • physical exhaustion

  • emotional strain

  • chronic stress

  • isolation

  • lack of rest

  • limited access to wellbeing support

I recognise the immense commitment involved in caring for someone with complex needs.

Part of my wider mission is to help increase awareness that carers also deserve care, rest and therapeutic support.

Accessibility and Inclusion

I aim to make sessions as accessible and welcoming as possible.

This includes:

  • adapting treatments for wheelchair users

  • allowing extra time where needed

  • working at a pace appropriate to the client

  • flexible communication approaches

  • creating calm sensory environments

  • working collaboratively with carers and support workers

  • respecting medical and physical limitations

  • prioritising emotional and physical safety

Inclusion is not an afterthought.

It is the foundation of the practice.

Community Impact Goals

My long-term goal is to help improve access to therapeutic wellbeing services for disabled people across Huddersfield and the wider Kirklees area.

This includes:

  • raising awareness of accessible therapeutic massage

  • working with disability organisations and carers’ groups

  • supporting profoundly disabled clients who are often overlooked by mainstream wellbeing services

  • reducing barriers to access

  • promoting dignity-centred therapeutic care

  • contributing to conversations around sensory wellbeing and disability inclusion

  • building partnerships with charities, support groups and care providers

Working With Organisations

I welcome opportunities to collaborate with:

  • parent and carer support groups

  • disability charities

  • hospices

  • supported living providers

  • day services

  • schools and SEND organisations

  • care providers

  • community wellbeing organisations

  • advocacy groups

Possible collaborations include:

  • awareness talks

  • sensory wellbeing workshops

  • adapted massage demonstrations

  • carer wellbeing sessions

  • staff wellbeing support

  • inclusive community events

Safeguarding, Ethics and Professionalism

Because many clients are vulnerable adults or disabled people with limited communication, safeguarding and ethical practice are central to everything I do.

I am committed to:

  • professional boundaries

  • respectful communication

  • confidentiality

  • collaborative working

  • consent-aware practice

  • ongoing learning

  • dignity and personhood

  • creating emotionally and physically safe experiences

Looking Forward

I believe profoundly disabled people deserve the same access to comfort, relaxation, care and wellbeing as anyone else.

My aim is not simply to provide massage.

It is to create spaces where disabled people feel respected, safe, included and valued.

Even small moments of calm, comfort and connection can matter deeply.
